For the 1st time using RFECU

For the 1st time using RFECU

This article is for the user which is 1st time using RFECU, providing the basic knowledge and understanding of RFECU products.

The engine check lamp will illuminate until starting the engine.

  • Before Euro4 vehicle, ex, Euro2 & Euro3 EFI models, the Engine check lamp will illuminate only 2 sec after key-on, if no DTC error code exist, it will light off automatically. For Euro4 regulation, the engine check lamp need to continuously light on until the engine is starting. RFECU is conformed this regulation, not with fault code.
  •
  • If with Fault code, will same as before the engine check lamp flashing the DTC fault code.( The DTC fault code list please refer to here , , and how to troubleshooting please refer to here)
  •
  • If using the OEM diagnostic tool, please select manufacturer: KYMCO, even other brand models installed with RFECU.
  • With APP 2.0, you are able to read the DTC code and troubleshooting instructions on your smartphone.
Download link for Performance ECU tuning tool APP.

  • Please download APP to your smartphone or PAD, currently APP 1.0(Freeware) for iOS in Chinese version only, for Android in English version only.
  • APP 2.0(Payware) both English and Chinese version are available for both iOS and Android system, it’ll automatically switch base on your smartphone/PAD language setting.
  •
  • iOS please go to APP store and search “RFECU” or click the following link or scan the following QR code.

3. It’s mandatory to Scan the QR code on Bluetooth adaptor for the 1st time using

  • Every Bluetooth adaptor have its specific address and series number, need to scan into smartphone for the 1st time using.
  •
  • In after, already stored in the smartphone, directly connect Bluetooth.

4.After Key-in the values, save the setting first and then submit the command

  • Fuel, Ignition or other adjustment, after key-in the values on APP, please save the setting values in smartphone memory(Memory1~ Memory3), the way to save the setting is pressing “Memory1~3” button more then 1 sec. Or, after sending the command, the screen will return to last page, if not doing saving, you need to key-in the values again.

Long press on Memory button over 1 sec for saving setting, and in after press submit button

  • Click the Memory button for calling out the setting stored in the memory of smartphone, and base on that continue adjustment.

Long press on Memory button over 1 sec for saving setting, and in after press submit button

5. Memory1~ Memory is stored at smartphone, Submit is sending the command to ECU

  • Save into Memory 1 ~ 3 is stored on Smartphone.
  •
  • Only after submitting the command, then start to have an effect on ECU.
  •
  • After “Submit” is stored at ECU RAM, the Fuel, Ignition already running with these adjustment. After Key-off, the ECU will write the setting data to the Flash memory automatically, the user don’t need to do any specific action.
6. If the Bluetooth not able to connect, Key-off 5 sec and Key-on, and then reconnect.

  • The Bluetooth adaptor have the power saving design, no attempt to connect for long time or no action, the Bluetooth adaptor will shutdown automatically.
  •
  • Disconnection, or Not able to connect, or submit couple times not able to succeed(not showing “OK”), Key-off over 5 sec, and then key-on(For initialization), and then reconnect.
7. Able to tuning while engine running(APP 2.0)

  • After submit while engine is running, will effect immediately, don’t need to wait to next key-off and key-on.
  •
  • But to be noticed, the ECU may omitted the command when the engine speed is high and ECU is too busy. If submit not succeed, re-submit.
8. Leave the Bluetooth adaptor plugged on the vehicle or take it down are both OK.

  • After finished adjustment, as mentioned, the setting values store in the random memory will store into Flash Memory automatically after Key-off, you can leave the Bluetooth adaptor plugged on the vehicle or take it down.
  •
  • The Bluetooth adaptor Ingress Protection Rating is IP67(able to resist under water 1 m for 30 min.) Not problem for heavy rain if plugged on vehicle. But to be noticed, some old vehicles, the diode of rectifier have been destroyed, already lose its function for cutting over voltage. While engine is running, the generated voltage may as high as 50~60 Volt. ,even hundred Volt. The battery indicator on dashboard only warming the voltage is low, not for over voltage, the connected electronics may damage due to over voltage!
9. Meaning of grid

  • You have to define and setting the grid for Engine speed and Throttle position(TPS) for the 1st time using, recommend setting to 2,500 rpm, 6,000 rpm and 8,000 rpm for engine speed, and 5∘, 30 ∘and 70 ∘for TPS.
  • Need to setting the grids for rpm and TPS for the 1st time using

  • 2,500 rpm is for idle, 6,000 rpm is for CVT changing ratio, and 8,000 rpm is for fixed ratio in after.
  •
  • 5∘TPS is for small throttle, 30 ∘TPS is medium throttle and 70 ∘TPS is for WOT.
  • For setting which cell will depend on currently engine speed and throttle is corresponding.
  • For engine speed, the most left cell is for below the grid setting, ex. below 2,500 rpm, using same offset in the cell; between 2 grids, the ECU will calculate the interpolation for the offset value, ex. 7,000 rpm, the ECU will calculate the interpolation of 6,000 rpm and 8,000 rpm for offset value; the most right cell, ex. 8,000 rpm, all the engine speed over 8,000 rpm will use the same offset value in the cell.
  •
  • For the TPS is also the same rule.
  • The ECU are able to support to 16,500 rpm, but for normal engine without reinforce the valve train(ex. Spring, seat, cotter…etc), will set to 11,000 rpm for fuel cut off for protecting your engine.
10. Fuel Adjustment

  • The basic fuel maps is same as OEM, no need to set. If the offset put 0 in the cells, it mean running the OEM maps.
  •
  • The Fuel is offset by increase and decrease % over basic maps, the adjustable range is from -100% ~ + 100%.
  •
  • Roughly, the fuel amount calculation as following, ex. if 125 c.c. engine bore up to 150 c.c., the engine displacement increase 150 c.c. – 125 c.c. = 25 c.c., it increase 25 c.c./ 125 c.c. = 20%. For practical experience, it will need to time the multiplier 1.5 for setting the fuel adjustment, that means 20% x 1.5 = 30 % to put into the cells.
  • For stock engine, if increase 10% fuel, the Air/Fuel ratio will decrease around 1.0~1.5 A/F(Will variate depend on how rich or lean of existing engine status), ex. 14.5 A/F  13.5 A/F
  • The most ideal way is monitoring the wide Band O2 sensor result to fine tune the setting fuel.
11. Ignition Spark Advance adjustment

  • Ignition Spark Advance is the most critical parameter for dominating engine performance, advance or retard, will have obviously effect on engine performance; But if with wrong adjustment, will also damage engine immediately.
  •
  • The cell at left and top is for idle, generally no need to adjust it as the ECU have engine speed stabilization function, the idle ignition will fluctuating for stabilizing to target engine speed.
  •
  • RFECU system, the Plus(+) is Advance and Minus(-) is Retard offset for Spark Advance angle.
  • The stock engine, the compression ratio is lower, and OEM ECU is setting base on RON92 gasoline, for emission, the ignition setting is more conservative. If using RON95 or RON98 higher Octane gasoline, it could advance 6~8 ∘ for low and medium loading of engine, for high loading or WOT, should not advance over 6∘, and pay attention to listen if any knocking happening. If engine is knocking, without lean burn or other engine issue, you should retard your ignition till no knocking.
  • For customization engine, the compression generally is higher, you may need to retard Spark advance to avoid knocking.
  • The detail setting couldrefer to here
12. O2 close/open loop range adjustment

  • O2 close loop means the engine running at 14.7 A/F
  •
  • O2 Open loop means disregard O2 feedback signal, the A/F ratio just depend on your fuel setting. If you want to running rich A/F, need to set to O2 open loop.
  •
  • Easy way to memorize is setting TPS 0∘is close loop, and setting TPS 100 ∘is open loop.
  • For customization engine if with high cam(high overlap), may need to run open loop at idle for rich A/F and that will improve idle stability.
13. Need to learn ABV adaption value, idling 5 mins after engine is fully warm up.

  • The ABV(Air Bypass Valve) is integrated on ECU/Air module, for adjustment the air required at idle or low engine speed., for controlling and stabilizing to target engine speed. After exchange a new ECU, need to learn ne w ABV adaptation value.
  •
  • ABV adaptation learning have the engine temperature threshold, need to reach certain temperature, current setting is over 105 degC. After fully warm up engine, idling couple minutes will learn ABV adaptation value.
  •
  • After cleaning the throttle body at workshop/dealership, also need to learn the new ABV adaptation value; Generally, when you stop at traffic light, the ABV learning will automatically done if waiting time long enough. If never stop at traffic light or no suitable chance to learn ABV adaptation value, just let it in idle over 1 minutes, it should already learn the new value, over 5 minutes should make sure will learn ne w ABV adaptation value.
  • After learning the ne w ABV adaptation value , the ABV duration will more suitable the real status of current engine status, will not have engine speed to high or too load issue, or even return to idle too slowly from high engine speed when closing throttle.
